Navigating G98/NI Standards: A Guide for Solar PV Installations in Northern Ireland

When installing Solar PV in Northern Ireland, compliance with G98/NI standards is a crucial part of the process. These regulations ensure that small-scale renewable energy systems can be connected to the NIE grid safely and reliably without pre-approval.

At BlueBuild Energy, we specialise in fully compliant, MCS-accredited Solar PV installations — and G98/NI is a key part of what we do.

While the technical jargon might seem daunting, the G98/NI process is designed to streamline the connection process for standard sized solar systems. At BlueBuild Energy, we handle every aspect of compliance for you, but knowing the basics helps you understand what's happening behind the scenes.

What is G98/NI?

G98/NI is specifically tailored for our local grid infrastructure. The standard covers microgeneration systems —and acts as a gateway to grid connection. When your system meets G98/NI criteria, you benefit from a simplified "install and notify" process that avoids lengthy pre-approval delays and costs.

These standards are in place to prevent any risk to the wider grid. An expertly installed and notified system will operate safely, avoid export issues, and remain compliant with all regulatory requirements.

Does G98/NI Apply to Your Solar Project?

Under this process you are limited to the maximum size of Micro-generators (inverters) that can be installed on one property. Those limits are:

  • Single-phase systems: Up to 3.68kW capacity

  • Three-phase systems: Up to 11.04kW capacity

When planning a larger system, such as a large-scale commercial installation, you will require G99 approval instead, which involves more detailed assessments and prior authorisation from NIE Networks.

The G98/NI Process: Install and Notify Explained

Here's where G98/NI shines—eligible systems follow a straightforward "install and notify" approach:

Step 1: Installation Proceeds - Your Solar PV System is installed by our team without waiting for pre-approval requirements.

Step 2: Notification – After the installation is complete, we fully register and commission your system with NIE, providing them with all required technical documentation.

Why G98/NI Matters

Compliance is not optional — it’s a regulatory requirement.

Without proper notification:

  • NIE Networks may ask you to disconnect your system

  • You may not be eligible to export energy back to the grid

  • Your installation may not meet MCS standards, which are often required for financial incentives such as the Smart Export Guarantee (SEG)

G98/NI compliance protects your investment and ensures long-term system performance.  Without correct notification, NIE Networks reserves the right to disconnect your system, regardless of how safely it was installed. This could leave you without solar generation and facing costly remediation work.
